Hey, bookworms and coffee lovers! ☕️ It’s that time of the week again. Yes, it’s book review time! This week, I’m finally getting around to a book that’s been on my list for ages.
Two nights ago, I finished Caraval, and WOW—what a ride! With its twists, illusions, and a romance that had me hooked, this book came highly recommended by my author friend, Laura. Although I’ve been tempted to read the newest releases, my heart kept pulling me back to Caraval. It’s the kind of book that swallowed me whole, and soon I was completely lost in its magic.
🎭 Spoiler Warning: Minor spoilers ahead, but I promise to keep the biggest twists under wraps!
Synopsis:
A legendary competition.
A mesmerizing romance.
An unbreakable bond
between two sisters.
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful and cruel father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless, she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away.
🎪 Worldbuilding: 5/5
Imagine stepping into a carnival where reality bends, time twists, and nothing is what it seems. That’s Caraval in a nutshell. Stephanie Garber doesn’t just build a setting. She creates an atmosphere. Every scene is dripping with lush details, from enchanted dresses that change color to cryptic clues hidden in plain sight. The world feels alive, unpredictable, and just the right amount of unsettling. It’s beautiful, but you never feel entirely safe.
🎭 Characters: 4.6/5
Scarlett Dragna is cautious, rule-following, and desperate to escape her controlling father. When she and her fearless, impulsive sister, Donatella, get an invitation to Caraval, Scarlett is forced into a world where trust is dangerous, and every move could be part of the game. Her journey from hesitant observer to active participant is slow, but so satisfying.
And then there’s Julian. Mysterious, frustrating, and way too charming for his own good. Is he helping Scarlett? Using her? Both? Their dynamic is full of tension, and I loved watching it unfold.
The real star, though? Caraval itself. The game is almost a character in its own right, and the way it manipulates, tricks, and tests everyone involved is just brilliant.
💘 Romance: 4.7/5
I love a slow-burn romance, and Caraval delivers. The chemistry between Scarlett and Julian is just enough to keep you hooked, but it never overshadows the mystery. There’s banter, stolen moments, and a lot of “can I trust you?” energy that keeps things interesting. It’s not over-the-top, but it definitely adds to the magic.
⏳ Pacing: 4.5/5
The first few chapters take their time setting things up, but once Scarlett enters Caraval, it’s go time. The game’s five-night structure keeps the tension high, and every clue unravels more mysteries. The last third of the book? Absolutely wild. Twists, betrayals, and moments that had me questioning everything.
🏆 Final Thoughts
Did Caraval cast a spell on me? Absolutely. Did I spend half the book wondering what was real and what was a trick? Yep. If you love whimsical fantasy with dark edges, Caraval is a must-read. It’s immersive, unpredictable, and full of heart. I’m actually looking forward to reading the next books in the series. Wish me luck!
✨ Overall Rating: 4.8/5
☕ Would I Recommend It? Without a doubt. If you love books like The Night Circus or Alice in Wonderland, Caraval will be your next obsession.
